Download Islamic CompanionWudu (ablution) is the spiritual purification that prepares a Muslim for prayer. It is more than just washing; it is an act of worship that wipes away sins and elevates the believer's rank. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"When a Muslim (or a believer) performs wudu and washes his face, every sin that his eyes have committed comes out with the water (or the last drop of water). When he washes his hands, every sin that his hands have committed comes out with the water. When he washes his feet, every sin that his feet have walked towards comes out with the water, until he emerges purified from sins." (Sahih Muslim, 244)
Wudu is the Islamic procedure for washing specific body parts with water in preparation for prayer (salah) and other acts of worship. It is a condition for the validity of prayer, and its perfection brings immense spiritual reward.
Based on the Quranic command in Surah Al-Maidah (5:6), the obligatory acts are:
"O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles." (Quran, 5:6)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to perfect our wudu with these additional acts:
Say "Bismillah" before starting wudu.
Start by washing both hands up to the wrists three times.
Take water into your mouth and rinse it three times, preferably using a miswak (toothstick) to clean the teeth.
Take water into your nostrils and blow it out three times. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"When you perform wudu, rinse your nose with water, then blow it out." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 161)
Wash your face three times, ensuring water reaches all parts.
Wash the right arm first, then the left, three times each, ensuring water reaches the elbows.
Wet your hands and wipe over your head once, starting from the front to the back and returning to the front.
Using the same water, wipe the inside and outside of your ears with your thumbs and index fingers.
Wash the right foot first, then the left, three times each, ensuring water reaches between the toes and up to the ankles.
Using a miswak (a twig from the Arak tree) during wudu is highly recommended. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"If I had not feared burdening my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak before every wudu." (Sunan an-Nasa'i)
Wudu is broken by:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Whoever performs wudu perfectly, his sins will come out of his body, even from under his nails." (Sahih Muslim, 245)
Wudu is a beautiful act of worship that combines physical cleanliness with spiritual purification. By following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we not only fulfill an obligation but earn immense rewards and have our sins forgiven. Strive to perfect your wudu, and you will find your prayers more meaningful and your connection with Allah stronger.
