Download Islamic CompanionThe 99 Names of Allah, known as Asma ul-Husna (The Most Beautiful Names), are the magnificent attributes of the Creator. Allah says in the Quran:
"And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them." (Quran, Surah Al-A'raf 7:180)
Understanding and reflecting upon these names is the highest form of knowledge in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever enumerates them (ahsaha) will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
The scholars explain that ahsaha (enumerating) has three levels:
These two names open 113 of the 114 surahs of the Quran. Ar-Rahman refers to Allah's universal mercy that encompasses all creation, while Ar-Rahim refers to His specific mercy for the believers.
Reflection: No matter how great your sins, Allah's mercy is greater. Never despair of His mercy.
Allah is the absolute owner and ruler of all existence. Every king, leader, and authority is subject to His command.
Reflection: Remind yourself that ultimate control belongs to Allah alone. This brings peace in times of uncertainty.
Allah is free from all imperfections, deficiencies, and flaws. He is transcendent above any comparison.
Reflection: Purify your intentions and actions, seeking to reflect His perfection in your character.
Allah is the source of all peace and security. From Him comes tranquility of the heart.
Reflection: When anxiety strikes, call upon Ya Salam and seek peace from the Source of Peace.
Allah is the Mighty, the Invincible. None can overcome His power or thwart His decree.
Reflection: When you feel weak or powerless, remember that you are connected to the Almighty.
Allah created everything from nothing. He is the originator of the heavens and the earth.
Reflection: Contemplate the creation around you — the stars, the trees, your own body — and see the hand of Al-Khaliq in every detail.
Allah's forgiveness is vast and repeated. He continuously forgives those who repent sincerely.
Reflection: Never let shame of past sins prevent you from turning back to Allah. His forgiveness is greater than your sins.
Allah provides for all creatures. He is the source of all sustenance — physical, spiritual, and emotional.
Reflection: Trust in Allah's provision. He knows what you need before you ask.
Allah's actions are perfect in wisdom, even when we do not understand them.
Reflection: When life doesn't make sense, trust in Al-Hakim. There is wisdom in every trial.
Include the names in your daily supplications. For example:
The Quran instructs us: "Invoke Him by them" (7:180). When making dua, call upon Allah using the name most relevant to your need.
Try to embody one name each week. If you study Al-Ghafur, focus on forgiving others. If you study Ash-Shakur (The Appreciative), focus on showing gratitude.
